Your quick guide to vaping with temp control

What is temp control vaping?

Temperature control vaping, also known as TC vaping, is a feature of your vaporizer that lets you pre-set values in Celsius / Fahrenheit that the coil on your device will not exceed. In short,

TC helps keep your coil temperature at a fixed rate: this does not depend on whether you take small or big inhales, your vaping technique, cloud production, etc. A vaper simply picks a temperature limit (typically from a range of 300°F to 600°F (100°C to 315°C) and the coil’s power is then automatically adjusted to the chosen temperature.

What it does is this: it creates a consistent vape and potentially lets you avoid dry hits.

When did temp control become available?

Temp control started with the company called Evolv back in 2014. This is when Evolv released their first DNA chip, which, until now, many consider to be one of the best temperature control mods on the market to this day.

Before Evolv’s DNA chip, most vape kits would only let vapers adjust watts. Today, both adjustable wattage and temperature settings are something a lot of vapers expect from their vape kits.

Why would you want a temperature control vape kit?

As we’ve mentioned a bit earlier, there are a number of advantages that come with using a TC kit. One of the main advantages is that it helps you avoid a dry hit — and a dry hit is what most vapers beware.

What is a dry hit? If you’ve never experienced one, you are on the lucky side. If you have, it’s quite an unforgettable experience. A dry hit happens when the wick in your device hasn’t absorbed enough e-liquid to cover the coil — so, when you fire your kit and inhale, you will not be inhaling your flavorful e-liquid but rather a mix of burnt metal fumes and wicking material.

Temperature control mods do a lot when it comes to avoiding a dry hit — especially when paired with nickel coils. In fact, most TC devices today are mostly equipped with coil heads consisting of Ni200 (Nickel) and/or Titanium as well as Stainless Steel.

How does temperature control work?

Temperature controlled vape kits come with built-in sensors that detect changes in resistance of the coil and use this information to estimate and adjust the temperature output. This helps avoid the overheating and burning of the coil and makes for a stable and consistent vape.

The higher the temperature in a MOD, the higher the voltage. The higher the wattage, the higher the voltage.

In order to ensure you get the most out of your e-juice, try experimenting with the temperature of your coils. Most TC mods will max out at 600 degrees, but you will soon discover that different temperatures paired with different coils make for very different flavor experiences.

When you are just starting out with temperature controlled vaping, it’s the baby steps that will get you the longest way. Start small, make delicate adjustments and slowly but surely make your way to the settings that best suit your needs.

What are the benefits of temperature control?

In addition to avoiding dry hits, vaping with temperature control simply makes for a smoother hit and gives you more power over your vaping sessions. It lets you personalize each hit that comes from your mod and, thus, results in a more satisfying overall vaping experience. This, in turn, makes vaping an even more efficient way of putting smoking cigarettes behind you.

Who is temperature controlled vaping for?

TC vaping is open to anyone and everyone who owns a TC device. However, more advanced TC vaping setups are definitely more suitable for experienced vapers. This is why it is strongly advised that you start slow and take your TC vaping journey step by step.

If you feel that temp control vaping is a bit too intimidating for now, you may want to try something that does not require that much prior knowledge and tech. Some of our entry-level devices (like the iQ One and the iQ Viva) come with built-in wattage control. Higher wattage settings mean that more power will be delivered to the coil — this will let you blow larger and warmer clouds and bring our new flavor notes in your e-liquid. When you turn the wattage down, you will get smaller and cooler clouds.
